Time to Move? Experts Explain Seasonality in the Moving Industry PDF Print E-mail

Do you know when the best time to move is? Obviously the best time for you is when you need to move, but that may not be the best time to try and hire a moving company! Expert moving consultants can explain seasonality in the moving industry so that you can plan for your next relocation efficiently.

The moving industry is extremely busy at certain times of the year, so if you want to move during busy season you will need to plan ahead. The summer months, from July through August are busiest, and reliable moving companies will be operating at peak capacity during this period.

Many families want to move in summer because the children aren't in school, and because the weather is generally better than in winter (no ice and snow to worry about!).

Relocating with children is certainly easier when they are not attending classes; the disruption to a child's routine is enough stress without having to juggle a new curriculum and fit into a new school partway through the year.

If, however, circumstances dictate that you must move during the busy summer season, it's imperative that you plan ahead. If you wait until the last minute to book a moving company you are likely to find it difficult (or impossible) to hire the mover that you want to deal with. The good ones book up early! Reliable moving companies will do their best to accommodate you, but there are only so many moving trucks and workers to perform your relocation.

You probably know that airlines book seats well ahead of popular travelling holidays. Well, moving companies also book ahead for moving during the summer months. You might even be able to secure a better rate for booking early enough; tariff rates are usually assessed and adjusted in the spring and booking before this may result in a better price for your move. Ask your moving consultant about it.

If you can move outside of the busy season, it will almost certainly be worth your while to do so. Not just from a cost perspective - it will also be easier to book a reliable moving company with less notice because they will have the same number of moving trucks and workers as they did during those busy summer months, but much less demand for their services.

Spring or early autumn (shoulder season) are good times to plan your relocation if you have flexibility in your moving dates. The weather is generally okay (compared to the middle of the winter) and the movers won't be as busy as they are in July and August.

Local moves may be able to get a better rate by avoiding month-end, ask your consultant about it!

Seasonality is definitely a factor in the moving industry, and understanding how it all works can help you decide the best time to move. A reliable moving company can help you move at any time during the year, but our best advice if you must move during the busy summer season is; plan well ahead and book as early as possible!
