While buying moving boxes may not be the most cost effective solution, they will provide the best protection for your possessions. You have the choice of either buying brand new boxes, or slightly used ones. The latter certainly will be at least a little bit cheaper, but the price difference is very small at the end of the day.

Rent moving boxes

For those who want the eco-friendly alternative, there are some services that rent out plastic moving boxes for a fee. However, these services from what I have seen are only located on the west coast. So unless you live in that region, then buying corrugated cardboard boxes are your only option.

Renting these boxes however is actually more expensive, though plastic is stronger than cardboard. The reason why they cost more is because the service actually delivers the boxes to your home directly because they take up so much space. So on top of paying a rental fee, you are also paying for the delivery.

Online box stores

If you want to buy cardboard boxes, then the best way to do so is online. Almost every box store I have personally seen offers free shipping. One of the few exceptions is UHaul, where you have to spend a minimum of $25 to qualify for free shipping.

One of the downsides typically to buying online is that you have to pay for shipping. Since that is out the window, buying online is the way to go as you won't have to leave the comfort of your own home to acquire moving boxes.

The prices online are very competitive, so they are pretty reasonable overall. Online box stores typically have just about everything you could possibly need for your move. They have all sizes of boxes, and specialty ones for flat screen TVs, lamps, pictures, computers, and so on.

Moving box stores online also have moving kits for up to 10 bedrooms. So if you aren't exactly sure how many boxes and supplies you need, buying a kit might be a good idea. If for some you find out that the 2 bedroom kit you purchased wasn't enough, you can always go back and buy some single boxes and supplies.

Local Stores

If you happen to live just around the corner from a box store, then buying from there is ideal option. Though, you may have to make a few trips to get all the boxes you need.
