Assisting a Senior During Their Move PDF Print E-mail

We are all taught to be kind and courteous when it comes to our elders, so we do our best to open doors, help them along the snowy sidewalk and bring hot casseroles and dinners to their homes. As people grow older, they're unable to do the things they used to be able to do with ease and many of them tend to become quite frustrated. It seems as though just yesterday they were bouncing around, picking up their kids as if it was no problem. They didn't have that pesky cane getting in the way all the time, and they had not one ache or pain and could remember where they put the keys when they walked into the house. These frustrations are completely understandable, and when it is necessary for them to relocate - whether to a smaller home or an assisted living building - although they may not want to admit it, they will definitely need some help. Here are ways I have helped the elderly people in my life during their relocation.

Offer to "clear out." Moving is a huge task for everyone, and it's especially huge if you're an elderly person who at times can barely find the energy to walk. When older folks are faced with the task of clearing out closets, basements, etc., from my experience, it's extremely overwhelming. It's not rare for them to have literally years and decades worth of items sitting in a basement because they don't want to throw it out or let go of their memories. Being there with them to help sort can help them gain perspective on the fact that they will definitely not use the manual telephone from the 30's in their new home and they could even gain some income by trading it in. Sometimes they just need some encouragement and another point of view.

Let them know they can lean on you. As mentioned above, it is difficult for many elderly folks to admit that they are no longer able to do everything they used to. This is when it's helpful for you to offer your assistance to them, with no complaints or problems. When my grandma needed help moving from her home of over 50 years to an assisted living center, it was incredibly difficult on her. She had so many memories and connections made in that home and facing the fact that she was leaving all of those was devastating to her. My being there with a happy face to help her along ended up saving her a lot of grief and emotional heartache. Be that person for the elderly person in your life.
