| The Importance of Light When Reading |

Many of you reading this article will be able to empathise when I say that there are simply not enough hours in the day. Working full-time and being a parent to three extremely active girls takes up an awful lot of time, not to mention the house work on top. Leisure time becomes a thing of the past and grabbing the odd few minutes peace and quiet here and there is like gold dust! When it does happen however and you realise the opportunity, it is important to make the most of it. Pretty soon the children will be making requests, work is on the phone and dinner needs to be prepared. The quietest part of the day for me comes around 8:00pm. The three girls are tucked up in bed sleeping soundly and I am not ashamed to gloat when I tell you they have always been excellent sleepers. I have been very lucky in that department and can relax once they are asleep. Rarely waking up, my children seldom surface before the alarm kicks in the following morning. At the point of relaxation, when I have decided the dishes can wait and attempted to hide a mammoth pile of clothes that is the ironing, I reach for my secret relaxation technique - a decent book. There is no better feeling than curling up on the sofa with a cup of tea, dim lights and a gripping storyline. I can spend a couple of hours with my book before my eyelids become heavy. At this point I admit defeat and make the journey to bed. A little while back I noticed I was squinting slightly to read, but did not think much about it. As the weeks progressed it became steadily worse until I visited my optician who gave me a low prescription for reading glasses. He also asked me about my reading habits and advised strongly against reading in a dimly lit room. Unaware for so many years, I learned that by not using the correct light, numerous conditions can occur. Headaches, RSI-type neck and back strain and the need for glasses (although the latter is extreme). Having invested in the perfect LED table lamp with brightness adjuster I am now able to read not only comfortably but safe in the knowledge that I am doing no further harm to my eyes. Of course it does not have to be a table lamp. Any form of brightness is ok, whether you use the main light or purchase an adjustable spot light, the strain on your eyes is significantly lessened. Leading a busy life can be stressful enough. Do not let your relaxation time become a restriction. Choose a level of brightness that is suitable for reading and the need for glasses could be avoided.
