A Lifetime of Granite PDF Print E-mail

Many varieties of granite can be found throughout the world. Granite slabs are selected based on their color and size and then cut to fit the project that they are intended for. After taking millions of years to be formed beneath the earth's surface, granite is quarried, cut, and sold for a variety of uses. Granite is a popular building material with an ancient history, prized for thousands of years for its beauty and durability. Today, granite can be found both in private homes and state monuments. To understand how this rock becomes polished and ready for distribution, let us follow the journey of a slab of granite making its way from a quarry in the US to a local surface manufacturer.

Creation

Our story begins with a stream of magma flowing beneath the earth's crust. Over millions of years, it cooled and crystallized, waiting to be discovered and molded into something remarkable. Although some large grey pieces could be seen above ground, it was not until the large deposit was found beneath the earth that the granite was brought to the surface.

Surfacing

A large portion of the granite was cut out of the quarried wall in one gigantic piece, and then cut again into smaller pieces with a diamond-tipped saw. Finally, the slabs, just under an inch thick and smoothly polished, were sent to dealers all over the world, where they would be shaped yet again after being purchased.

Finding a Home

A template had been drawn up, and the dealer's clients were waiting to see their template laid out on the material they had selected, Sierra White granite originating in the US. The speckled black and white granite gleamed, and the couple nodded approvingly. An installation date was set, and fabrication began promptly.

The final cuts were made using a digitally controlled machine, creating perfectly precise cuts and smooth, flawless edges. The stone was polished once more, and sealant was applied to protect the surface from staining. The countertops were finally ready.

On the day of the installation, the perfectly cut granite was inspected, and then installed in about four hours by two strong men. As soon as the job was done, the stunning countertops became the focal point of the room. The next morning no one in the house used the kitchen table. The entire family sat on bar stools, sipping orange juice and admiring their new countertops.
