How Far Will Your Extractor Fan Pull? PDF Print E-mail

Ventilation is a great science and all the sums can be calculated to decide on the number of room changes of air per hour, the size of the extractor fan and the length of the ducting run and the resistance of the grills, and somehow it is all put together and it does not quite work right. Either the resistance in the system is too large or too small, the room can be hot and stuffy or cold and draughty. This is where the skill of the designers of the fans and systems and the design of the particular layout required for the space to be ventilated must be good.

It is worth considering exactly what is required from an extractor fan system, is it required to remove stale air and replace it with fresh air from outside or is it to cool a room full of very warm people. It may be that it is a problem with kitchen or bathroom smells. The problem should be analysed to examine how long the ventilation or extraction is required. Is it a continuous usage at a low extraction rate or is it a quick and high fan speed extraction over a very limited period?

When those questions have been answered then ask what you do not want from a ventilation or extraction system and this is probably as important as what you want because the suppliers and extractor fan manufacturers will certainly have thought of them. In this case it may be that you do not want any extractor fan noise or vibration or at least a very low sound and vibration. You may not want too rapid extraction that drags all the heat out of the room, or you may want a very fast extraction to get rid of unwanted aroma's or to clean a large room quickly.

Whatever is required is certainly available and it is getting the right balance that is critical to the design, so many extractor fans are put in on a cheap and cheerful basis and whilst it works it really is not satisfactory. Consider a larger fan with a variable speed control, which will give an adequate method of changing to your exact requirements. Try and foresee that the run of ducting may have to turn the odd high resistance corner and see if there is any way that these can be avoided. Buy a decent grill that shuts automatically when the extractor fan stops to restrict any back draughts.

From major brands such as Wylex, MK and Europa Components, take a look at the extensive range of extractor fans available online. Extractor fans are designed with specific purposes in mind, whether looking to remove hot air from a bathroom or to be used in a commercial aspect, different specifications are required to do the job.
