Economic Climate Expands the Scope of Typical Do It Yourself Projects PDF Print E-mail

A quick look at the economic climate reveals troubling storms are still brewing. The economy is shaky and problems seem to linger. Home prices fell last summer by 3.8% and by a huge 28.3% since the market peaked five years ago according to LPS Applied Analytics. Banks are still holding on to their money tightly and foreclosures still darken the sky. This is why an expensive home improvement project might be out of the picture. This has forced many homeowners tighten up the tool belt and do it themselves. Carpet projects are now being considered by some home owners who have learned that they can save a lot of money. The three biggest problems appear to now have some solutions.

#1 The Tools: Most people know that some special tools are required. But many people are not aware that these tools can be easily rented at many of the large home improvement centers. There are also online sources for renting tools. Many of the online sources have local affiliates where the tools can be picked up and returned.

#2 The Carpet: If you are going to do it yourself, you probably feel like you should be saving some money. Buying carpet online is a valid option. There are a number of online sources for carpet that provide very good prices and can ship the carpet to you. Part of the problem with carpet is the size and weight. So how do you get something so awkward? For most people the easiest way would be to have it shipped to a local freight terminal they can place it on a truck or trailer. From there you take to the installation site and drop it on a driveway where it can be cuts you will then install. New top quality carpet with a full manufactures warranty are available when you buy carpet online, with significant cost savings.

#3 The Help: Local carpet installers can usually be found at Service Master or other sites were tradesman can be found. Books and online sources like the one mentioned above are also easily found. One should always have at least one helper with a good strong back because moving the carpet requires two people. If one is willing to be patient and work with care, a top-notch job can be accomplished yourself and you can save a great deal of money. There are helpful online sources that explain how to install carpet as well. One of my favorite sources of good information is the Carpet and Rug Institute. They have very good instructions on how to install carpet and how to use the tools.
